The Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers lies at the heart of the EC HR Strategy which contributes to the improvement of career prospects and working conditions for researchers in Europe. The Code sets out the principles and requirements to be met by institutions in order to ensure that values such as transparency of the recruitment process and equal treatment of all applicants are respected.
In its HR policy, the Jagiellonian University follows the principles set out in the European Charter for Researchers. The University’s commitment is reflected in provisions of the Statute (§ 154) which describes in detail eligibility criteria for research posts and a selection procedure as recommended in the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. The responsibilities of research staff are described in the JU's Work Regulations. (JU Work Regulations - amendments).
The Jagiellonian University systematically reviews and streamlines its internal procedures and practices. The internal evaluation is based on the Open, Transparent and Merit-based Recruitment of Researchers (OTM-R) checklist containing a set of 23 questions to assess transparency of the recruitment system, control mechanisms and communication with applicants.
Work is currently underway on a comprehensive document that will provide information and guidance on all stages of the recruitment process, deliver ready-made templates in Polish and in English making recruitment more efficient and consistent, provide selection committees and researchers applying for employment with the best practice overview.
In February 2020, Rector appointed the first ever university ombudsperson for academic rights and values. The Ombudsperson monitors compliance of academic rights and values with legal regulations, the Academic Code of Values and the Code of Good Practice in Higher Education. The Academic Code of Values adopted by the JU’s Senate in 2013 sets out the fundamental principles and values that guide the Academic Community. It is complemented by the Code: Good Practices in Higher Education developed by CRASP (The Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland).
As part of the EU policy to promote equal rights, issues related to equality, inclusiveness, integration and innovation are considered particularly important, while gender equality is treated as a major social and political goal.
The EC Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025, addressed to the EU Member States and associated countries, adopted as the main goal the strengthening The European Research Area (ERA). The Horizon Europe 2021-2027 framework program also sets gender equality as a cross-cutting priority, the aim of which is to increase the level of equality among researchers.
To comply with the above assumptions and in order to define detailed solutions for ensuring gender equality, the Jagiellonian University Gender Equality Plan (GEP) has been developed. Its tools are designed to ensure gender equality as well as to guarantee equal opportunities and treatment for all members of the academic community.
The Policy of Open Access
The Jagiellonian University implements the Open Access Policy by creating conditions for sharing scientific publications and research data of its employees and doctoral students.
Through the Knowledge Portal of the Jagiellonian University Medical College also JUMC promotes the idea of open access in digital form to scientific publications and research results. The portal provides useful information on open access instructions, the European Union's Open Access policy, webinars and conferences on open access as well as publishing platforms for research publication. It also presents data on the implementation of the project Portal for the Management of Knowledge and Scientific Potential of the Jagiellonian University Medical College. The portal is a project that aims at creating a complementary segment The Repository of Open Access to the Scientific and Didactic Achievements of the Jagiellonian University. One platform combines and provides open access to scientific resources in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, public health, environmental health, occupational safety and health, ergonomics and health protection. Thanks to the created database of experts in various fields of medicine, this tool facilitates cooperation between research centers and representatives of the socio-economic environment, as well as allows the re-use of scientific resources by entities from outside the public finance sector operating in the field of medicine and related sciences.
JU Repository
The Jagiellonian University has a repository, which is a public service, and which task is to collect, disseminate and promote the scientific and didactic achievements of the University’s employees. The JU Repository contains the following collections:
- bibliographic descriptions of publications by authors employed at JU,
- full-text publications of the JU employees,
- theses defended at JU,
- full-text journals and journal articles published at JU,
- information on the JU students’ theses,
- information about conferences organized by JU,
- publications and studies created as part of ongoing projects at JU.
Publications made available in the JU Repository are automatically indexed in global aggregators and search engines such as: Google Scholar, OpenAIRE, BASE, Microsoft Academic or CORE. Currently, the JU Repository is the largest system of this type in Poland.
University Coordinator for Open Access to Research Publications and Data
Yet another entity supporting university employees in the process of publishing scientific achievements under Open Access is the University Coordinator for Open Access to Research Publications and Data.
The latest information on Open Access is available on the website of the Open Science at the Jagiellonian University portal.
Furthermore, the employees of the Jagiellonian University have the opportunity to participate in training courses aimed at introducing the idea of open access, the principles of Plan S, the NCN's openness policy as well as publishing their own publications in open access with both Polish and foreign publishers.
The Jagiellonian University popularizes science by disseminating scientific achievements in the field of both science – including medical, social and natural sciences - and humanities. The university presents the work of its scientists, their research and the latest achievements - both nationally and internationally. Promoting inventions and technologies devised by the university’s employees and doctoral students aims at building a knowledge society.
Information on current research in various fields of knowledge carried out at the Jagiellonian University is published in the popular science publication Projektor Jagielloński.
Promotion of science is very important and indispensable. Science does not have to be perceived as inaccessible and hermetic, it can also be fascinating in perception. Projector is a collection of original popular science texts, whose authors are eminent scientists of the Jagiellonian University.
The Jagiellonian University provides its employees with assistance and support in the promotion of research projects, for instance through websites such as promUJ naukę or NAUKOSKOP, which publish information on various scientific phenomena in an interesting graphic form of scientific infographics.

As part of the Initiative of Excellence - Research University programme, the Jagiellonian University implements the Gates project, through which it popularizes science, cooperating with the sphere of business as well as with local initiatives. Within the Gates project various initiatives of university units are realized, for example by the Copernicus Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and the Centre for Technology Transfer CITTRU.
The Copernicus Center for Interdisciplinary Studies organizes numerous lectures for the wide audience, runs a popular science channel on Youtube and co-organizes the scientific and cultural Copernicus Festival.
The Centre for Technology Transfer CITTRU is a university unit that supports researchers in disseminating knowledge and cooperating with the business sector It also cares for the use of innovative solutions devised by employees, doctoral students and students in order to commercialize the results of scientific research.
